James S. Hornung, 78, of 109 W. 5th Street, died Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 22, 2012) at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, after a very long, courageous fight with cancer and his family by his side.
He was born July 16, 1934, in Emporium, a son of the late Simon and Matilda “Tillie” Oswald Hornung.
On May 21, 1955, in St. Mark Catholic Church, he married Sandra Regelman Hornung, who survives.
Mr. Hornung graduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1952. He retired from Sylvania, where he worked in sales for over 33 years. After retirement he started JSH Enterprises in 1993 and continued to operate the company until April of this year. Years ago he owned the former Little Shopper for seven years. He loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
He loved all local athletics and was a member of the sports clubs and attended most high school sports. Jim loved the Pirates and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends on Wednesday evenings. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Denny Hornung and his wife Mary, Vince Hornung, and Paul Hornung, all of Emporium; three daughters, Karen Czekai of Durham, NC, Julie Coolick of Harrisburg, and Amy Thwing and her husband Rick of Mansfield; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Jane Soban and her husband Edward of Kensington, MD; and two brothers, Edward Hornung and his wife Cly of St. Marys and Bernard Hornung of Emporium.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Blair Hornung, and a grandson, Joshua Paul Hornung.
Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Friday from 4-7 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church
235 East Fourth Street, Emporium on Saturday (August 25, 2012) at 10:30 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.
Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium.
